Guidance for Charlotte Social Security disability applications, appeals, and hearings

The Social Security disability evaluation process is complex, bureaucratic, and heavily-regulated. Sometimes its results defy common sense.

Despite the many questions that arise with Social Security disability, Charlotte applicants have few places to go for detailed and reliable answers. We designed this 100-page website to fill that void, no matter what stage of the process you are in. We recommend starting with these articles and videos:

Are you thinking about applying for Social Security disability in the Charlotte, North Carolina, area?
* The “Are you likely to qualify” video above provides a straightforward verbal introduction to disability determination
* 9 tips for applying sheds additional light on what the Social Security Administration (SSA) seeks before awarding disability benefits
* The e-mailed “Lessons on winning benefits” available in the top right corner of this page teach in staggered and bite-size portions

Was your application for Social Security disability denied?
* Examples of who and who is not disabled illustrates the sometimes-puzzling results under SSA regulations
* Advice for appealing a denial walks you step-by-step through filing your appeal
* The Library section below entitled “Applying for disability benefits when you have ____” digs deep into the proof requirements for specific impairments, and includes valuable medical opinion forms for your doctor

Was your request for reconsideration denied?
* Answers to 14 common hearing questions introduces the why and how of Social Security disability hearings
* Our “How the Judge Determines Disability” video provides a verbal explanation of what you and your disability attorney will need to prove at the hearing
* The Social Security disability hearing details what happens at the hearing, and your testimony lists the questions you will likely be asked by the judge and your attorney

The most important lesson

If you believe you cannot work, you should apply for disability and then appeal any denial. Two-thirds of applications are denied but more than half of the claimants who appeal are found disabled, so do not let rejection discourage you.

If you want assistance with your Charlotte, North Carolina, Social Security disability claim, we can take you through both the application and appeal process. We have extensive experience with both.

How much does our assistance cost?

Almost all of our North Carolina Social Security disability clients prefer a contingent fee, which is a fee paid only if they are awarded benefits.

The usual fee is 25% of back benefits up to a maximum amount set by the Social Security Administration, which is currently $6,000. That is, our fee is one-fourth of those benefits that build up by the time you are found disabled and benefits are paid. No fee is subtracted from your current monthly benefits.

In addition to the fee, you will be asked to reimburse us for our expenses in obtaining medical records, medical opinion letters, and the like.
